A proposal by the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN) to see how roads constructed with concrete up to one foot thick to be introduced in the Country is upspring, Blueprint has learnt.
Professor Charles Etim Akpan Uko, a member of the Investigating Panel, (COREN) disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in his office at the department of Civil Engineering University of Uyo recently.
He said “we are working on a proposal to see how Roller Compacted Concrete Roads could be brought into the country. These are roads constructed one foot-thick and after that, you go and sleep for 70 years until your generation passes away. Most of the roads we are constructing now would not last up to five years because the specifications are faulty.”
The Structural Engineering lecturer said that Nigerians are afraid that the system is too expensive but noted that what the country was doing now was a waste of money.
“Some roads do not last up to five years and you go back to do them. Why don’t you close your eyes and do they proper so that your grand children will come to meet them rather than going on those short term measure that is not helping us?, he said.
Professor Charles Uko also explained that we have cases of collapse buildings in the country because some regulatory bodies were not empowered to do their work properly.
