Church directs suspension of activities following attack on Makurdi school

In response to a recent attack on Fr. Angus Frazer Memorial High School, the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi has taken decisive action to protect the lives of students by suspending activities in the school.

Unidentified gunmen had infiltrated the school premises during the late hours of Tuesday, firing indiscriminately while students were asleep.

However, the swift and professional response of the school’s principal and a team of civil defense officers prevented a potential catastrophe.

Unfortunately, one of the heroic officers sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, the Diocese of Makurdi swiftly ordered the suspension of all activities at the school.

A statement issued Thursday by Very Revd Fr. Moses Jorapuu, the director of social communications, noted that the preemptive measure was aimed to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

He said Bishop Wilfred Anagbe and the management of the Via Christi Society, unanimously agreed that safeguarding the lives of the children must take precedence over any other consideration.

He said in addition to securing the school, the Diocese of Makurdi has appealed to relevant authorities to prioritise the safety of citizens in the region.

He added that the incident at  the school underscored the urgent need for comprehensive security measures to protect educational institutions and communities in the state.

Fr. Angus Frazer Memorial High School is situated along Welfare Quarters at Utuur Layout Phase 3 in Makurdi, the capital of Benue state and the area has gained notoriety due to incidents of killings and kidnappings, often attributed to suspected herdsmen.

The diocese has also issued directives to priests and pastoral units to enhance security measures around their premises.
