Man sentenced to 6 months for ‘house-breaking, theft’

A Senior Magistrates’ Court at Wuse Zone 6 in Abuja yesterday sentenced a labourer, Abba Mohammed, 22, to six months in prison for stealing.

The Senior Magistrate, Mrs Kadijah Mustapha, sentenced the convict without an option of fine, after Mohammed pleaded guilty to the offences.
He said: “The punishment is to make you change your lifestyle from that of crimes to being a good citizen.

“The convict pleaded guilty to stealing a plasma television, HP laptop, a VCD, shoes, credentials, seven pieces of new jeans trousers and wrappers.”
He also stole new hand bags, bed sheets, perfumes, sanitary towels; roll on, teddy bears, a box of under wears and a box of towels belonging to one Adirije Arcadia.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Musa Abdullahi, told the court that Arcadia of Berger Quarry Community, Abuja, lodged a report against the accused at the Mpape Police Station on February 13.
After the convict’s guilty plea, the prosecutor prayed the court to summarily sentence him under Section 157 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The section states that “if an accused admits that he has committed the offence he is accused of, his admission shall be recorded.
It adds that this must “ be nearly as possible, in the words used by the accused and if he shows no sufficient cause why he should not be convicted, the court may convict him accordingly.”
Abdullahi said the offence contravened the provision of Sections 287 and 346 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
