Wakawa’s feats at Neuropsychiatric Hospital Maiduguri

Without a doubt the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, has been undergoing tremendous transformation in the last six years. This is as a result of the appointment of Professor Ibrahim Abdu Wakawa as its Chief Medical Director, CMD, Chief Consultant Psychiatrist in 2016.

The feats, which include the upgrade of facilities as well as the provision of effective and efficient medical services to the people of Maiduguri, Borno state and, indeed, the North-east zone ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency, are being achieved by the hospital’s pragmatic and enigmatic CMD, Professor Abdu Ibrahim Wakawa.

Since he assumed leadership of the hospital in 2016, Professor Wakawa has embarked on numerous projects as part of his landmark contributions to the development of the Nigerian medical space/field.

For instance, under his watch, many projects have either been completed or being executed. These include the construction of Electro-Diagnostic Complex, renovation and the furnishing of Pharmacy Block, Phase 1 Computerisation of Medical Records, Pharmacy, Nursing Services, Laboratory, Radiology, EEG, Community Clinic, GOPD, Social Welfare, the Finance, Accounts and NHIS departments, procurement of electro encephalograpic machine (Neurofax 1200k Basic recording, review & its cameras) for the institution. 

Others are procurement of a Peugeot partner Ambulance, the renovation of Detoxification & Rehab Wards, provision of boreholes,overhead tank & underground reservoir for the new students hostel and the newly completed ECD complex and the procurement of facilities for the extension of the School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing.

As of 2019, the CMD had already completed the construction of Psycho- Geriatrics and Children’s Complex, construction and furnishing of 12 consultant offices, construction and furnishing of new Library & ICT Complex, renovation of Public Health Department, provision of Child Psychiatric Unit, renovation and furnishing of Community Clinic, furnishing of Accident and Emergency/Assessment Complex, renovation and furnishing of Pharmacy Block, phase 2 and procurement of two utility vehicles.

In 2020, the following projects were completed: the renovation of Occupational Therapy Department, procurement of four utility vehicles for the offices of board chairman, medical director, head of clinical services and the director of administration, re-roofing and renovation of the administrative department/block, School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing and the Main Auditorium.

The rest are procurement of vehicle for Finance and Accounts Department, radiological machines two Volution P8 GE Mobile Ultrasound Machine (Doppler) and 1 Siemens Mobilett plus Mobil X- ray machine.

Professor Wakawa is presently the Vice President, International Society of Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Professionals (ISSUP) Nigeria chapter. He was chairman of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Borno state chapter and member of many professional bodies. He has attended several international and local conferences.

Professor Wakawa has played a pivotal role in mentoring and advising youths in Borno state and Maiduguri in particular on the dangers of drug abuse and the use of hard drugs.

He obtained his MBBS degree in microbiology and physiology from the University of Maiduguri in 200, a fellowship in psychiatry from the West Africa College of Physicians in 2009. 

The CMD is a certified addiction practitioner and member of the National Technical Working Committee Group on Drugs Reduction. He is also a member of the National Post-Graduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Professor Wakawa, who has over 50 high standard academic publications to his credit, is happily married with children.
