FG commissions Maska Earth Dam in Katsina

The federal government has commissioned the newly reconstructed Maska Earth Dam in Katsina state.
The reconstructed dam which was executed through the Ecological Fund Office was handed over to the Funtua Local Government Area in Katsina, with the aim of providing adequate water for Agriculture and other basic water needs of the communities, in and round the local government.
Speaking at the commissioning and handing over of the Maska Earth Dam, a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations Unit, Mrs Kenechukwu Offie, at the weekend, said the Minister of Water Resources, Engr.
Suleiman Adamu, noted that the project is part of the Ecological intervention projects across the six geopolitical zones approved by President Muhammad Buhari from inception of his administration.
According to him the reconstructed dam was executed by the federal government through the Ecological Fund Office in the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The Minister stated that the project is expected to address the decay and degradation of the dam that provided water for agricultural and other purposes for the communities around the environs.
“The overall objective of the dam construction is to increase the capacity of the dam to provide adequate water for farming and grazing purposes”, he said.
He added that the commissioning of the project is to fulfill the promise of the present administration, that no part of the country will suffer neglect owing to its geographical location or political consideration.
“The completion of this project has also underscored the Federal Government’s concerted effort and sincerity of purpose in tackling environmental problems in our country” he said.
He however, charged the communities to cherish the project by ensuring the proper use and management of the dam, adding that it is the responsibility of the communities to own and maintain the project to ensure its sustainability.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office represented by a Deputy-Director, Ecological Fund Office, Mr.
Awwal Sani said the dam was first constructed in 1996.
The reconstruction work on the dam was initiated through a request for intervention for improvement on the dam capacity.
According to him the reconstruction process started on the 31st, October, 2017 and completed on the 1st January, 2018 for the benefit of the host community and its environs.
He called on the host community to take over and exercise ownership over the project to ensure its sustainability and to ensure that the resource of the Federal Government will not be wasted.
Earlier, the Minister toured Zobe Regional Water Supply scheme.
He was impressed with the level of work done.
The scheme is expected to serve communities in Katsina, Dutsinma, Charanchi, Kankia, Bindawa and Kurfi Local Government Areas in Katsina State with potable water
