Ebonyi LG poll: It will be injustice to deny Unwana community another term – Analyst

As the local government and councillorship elections in Ebonyi state draws closer, a political analyst from Afikpo local government of the state, Chief Emeka Obiahu, has called on Governor Francis Nwifuru, All Progressives Congress (APC) and stakeholders of Afikpo to allow Unwana community have another two years slot of the chairmanship position.

This against the backdrop of an online publication that Amasiri community in Afikpo North West constituency should be allowed to produce the next Chairman of Afikpo local government.

Obiahu said it would be great injustice against Unwana community if it was not allowed to have another two years slot at the chairmanship position in the forthcoming local government and councillorship elections slated for July this year.

Obiahu said: “It is said that what is good for the goose, is also good for the gander. This accounts why Unwanna community should be given another two years for Chairmanship position of Afikpo local government area

“This is because, since the creation of Ebonyi state in 1996, last two years, 2022 was the first time Unwana community produced an elected Chairman of the local government while other communities including Amasiri and Ehugbo communities have all had their shots for many years.

“Unwana man by name Chief Akaa of the blessed memory only nanned the council 33 years ago that was long before creation of Ebonyi state.

“Amasiri which is under Afikpo North West constituency was in the Chairmanship position for four years. The community left the position two years ago.

“A particular family in that Amasiri, Oko Enyum family stayed in that seat for the years the community held sway in that Chairmanship position.

“It is a common knowledge that Ogbonnia Oko Enyum and her sister, Obiageri Oko Enyum from Amasiri community, were the last Chairmen of Afikpo local government before the position shifted to Unwana community under Afikpo North East state constituency following the resolution of stakeholders of the local government and Unwana has only stayed in the position for two years.

“Afikpo North West constituency has also been having it’s large share of political positions even more than Afikpo North East state constituency the largest communities in the local government.

“For instance, Akpoha which is under the Afikpo North West constituency produced the Speaker of the State House of Assembly for eight years in the person of Chief Christopher Omo Isu who later represented Afikpo/Edda federal constituency in the House of Representatives for also eight years. Omo Isu is currently the Chairman, Ebonyi Revenue Board Service.

“Afikpo North West state constituency also produced the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Chief Whip and Leader of the Assembly in the person of Hon. Ikoro Kingsley Ogbonnia who is still in the Assembly as the Leader of the House. Ikoro is from Ozizza community in the Afikpo North West constituency. Ikoro has been in the state House of Assembly for 13 getting to 16 years now.

“Afikpo North West constituency has also produced two Commissioners; Professor Amari Omaka who is in charge of Higher education and who hails from Amasiri community, Professor Nwogo Obasi from Akpoha community.

“With all these instances, it will be a very big injustice to Unwana community and Afikpo North East state constituency if the Chairmanship position is taking back to Amasiri community/Afikpo North West constituency”.

Cyber security levy necessary to curb activities——CSO

A non governmental organization,
Nigerian First Project (NF-PRO),
has drummed support for cyber security levy in Nigerian.

Speaking at the programme organized by the group yesterday in Abuja, Comrade Hamza Umar Saulawa, Coordinator, Nigeria First Project and Comrade Bishir Dauda Sabuwar Unguwa Katsina, Director, Research and Documentation, called on all patriotic Nigerians to rally behind the federal government in its noble determination to rid the nation of any vestige of criminality, CyberCrimes and terrorism inclusive.

“In the face of growing cybercrimes in Nigeria with its attendant consequences on our nation,we find the ongoing hysterical vicious campaign against the Cybersecurity levy incongruence with the desire of many patriotic Nigerians to see that our hitherto country’s good image is restored.
“It is obvious that the conversation is being manipulated by the section of the minority vocal elites to look as if the levy is imposed to punish the masses. This is happening despite the clarification made by the Chairman, Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Shehu Umar Buba. We feel that this kind of debate in which many take an extreme end is not helpful at all.

“We urge all Nigerians to objectively and without any prejudice, examine this landmark clause -Cybersecurity Levy in its entirety. They would surely see its great prospects to our country.

“From the outset,it is important for Nigerians to note that cybercrime is not only undermining Nigeria’s economy, but also has continued to tarnish our image globally. Today innocent Nigerians all over the world are being unfairly treated with suspicion at Airports, embassies, motorparks, etc.

“Indeed it is so embarrassing that whenever there is a discussion about cybercrime anywhere, the first people who come to minds are Nigerians. Many innocent Nigerians are being embarrassed, humiliated and profiled ,because of the activities of cyber criminals . Many Nigerians have lost golden opportunities, because of this terrible phenomenon.”
