COVID-19: Lagos lawmaker accuses immigration officers of negligence

A lawmaker representing Agege II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Yinka Ogundimu, has accused the immigration officers at the airport of negligence and dereliction of duty which he said was responsible for increase in cases of corona virus in the country.

Hon. Ogundimu made this allegation  following the motion moved by Hon. Rotimi Olowo on the 3rd wave and new variant of corona virus during Thursday’s plenary.

According to the Agege II representative, the immigration officers at the airport who are saddled with the responsibility of checking new entrants into the country seem to have relax the rules.

“The explosion in the cases of this deadly variant of corona virus is not unconnected with negligence on the part of the immigration officers at the airport.  People now come in into the country without being tested.

Some even paid for the test and don’t get tested. They no longer go for the one week quarantine as stipulated by Federal Taskforce on COVID-19″, he said.

Hon. Abiodun Tobun also supported this position said,  “it is time for the government to be more vigilant, people are already circumventing the process, they no longer take vaccine but collect card, same with testing. Let the people in charge be truthful to it”, he pleaded.

Hon. Rotimi Olowo in the motion decried the new wave, citing the increase in cases among the students of University of Lagos which has led the school authority to close down all the school hostel.

The lawmaker believed the last convocation ceremony in UNILAG must have been responsible for the new increase as some people came from outside the country to attend the event.

Many of the lawmakers put their weight behind the motion which was seconded by Hon. Tope Adewale representing Ifako-Ijaiye constituency.

The House then directed the Clark, Mr Olalekan Onofeko, to forward the resolution of the house, asking the governors to intensify more effort in sensitising the people about the 3rd wave of the virus.

It was also resolved that Lagos state  should have a desk at the airport to ensure strict compliance to the protocols.
