2019: NOA, Kwara NUJ mull seminar against hate speeches, fake news

Acting Director, National Orientation Agency, Kwara state, Mr Olusegun Adeyemi has disclosed plans by the agency to collaborate with the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists towards organizing a seminar ahead of 2019 general elections.
He said the training was necessary to prepare journalists on the need to disseminate fair and balanced reports before, during and after the forthcoming the general elections.
The NOA director said the seminar became necessary following the frantic efforts being made by the federal government to kick against fake news and hate speeches pervading the media scene in the recent past.
Adeyemi disclosed this yesterday when he led the principal officers of his agency on a courtesy visit to the NUJ secretariat on Offa road, Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.
The NOA director described journalists as critical stakeholders at the vantage position to amplify all government programmes and policies to the public.
He explained that NOA could not achieve its set goals without the support of the media, saying that “the mass media is indispensable partner with the NOA.” According to him, “Our message will not get to the public without the support of media, we really need each other and that is why we are looking for a collaborative effort through training exercise for the members of the fourth estate of the realm.” The DG appealed to the leadership of NUJ in the state to as a matter of professionalism prevail on their members to always disseminate news in accordance with the ethics of the profession so as to kill fake news and hate speeches.
