Southern, M/belt Forum to NASS: Stop ongoing voter registration

Elder statesmen under the aegis of the Southern Leaders and Middle Belt Elders Forum, have urged the National Assembly to ensure the cancellation of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
They group said the exercise is flawed and skewed to favour a section of the country.
Speaking on behalf of a delegation of the group during a courtesy visit to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara yesterday, Air Vice Marshal Idongesit Nkana (rtd), said using the current voter register to conduct the 2019 general elections would produce a non credible and unacceptable outcome for Nigerians.
He argued that the ongoing CVR exercise has been discredited under-age registration, registration of foreigners from neighbouring countries, as well as a skewed approach to the advantage of the the north where incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari has his stronghold.
“The INEC must correct this or else, the result declared in an election under such an atmosphere is capable of creating chaos and would be rejected by Nigerians,” he warned.
Nkana while supporting calls for restructuring, appealed to the speaker to back the devolution of powers to states and the entrenching of the true principle of fiscal federalism in the country, as he condemned the spate of killings in various parts of the country.
Earlier, leader of the Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo informed Dogara that the body favours the restructuring of the nation and the enactment of a constitution that accords equality to all sections of Nigeria, adding that “this is the only thing that can keep this nation one and united”.
Speaker Dogara while responding said that Nigerians must work for the survival of democracy for the benefit of the majority and that efforts should be geared towards allaying the fears of those opposed to restructuring.
