Reps demand justice for murdered corper Chalya Silas

The House of Representatives has called for immediate arrest and prosecution of killers of youth corps member, Chalya Silas, who was recently killed  in Kaduna.

Silas was reportedly murdered by criminals who accosted her while jogging in the morning of October 18, 2023, and was stabbed to death for questioning their demand for her GSM handset.

In adopting a motion sponsored by Hon. Beni Lar, Tuesday, the House called on the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to intensify search for the hoodlums with a view to bringing them to book, and also urged the National Youth Service Corps, to have a review of the scheme to ensure the security of serving corps members.

The House has also called for adequate compensation for the family of the victim even as a minute silence was observed in her honour.

In a chat with journalists after the motion was adopted, Lar said the murder of Silas, being an only child “has left the parents, and the entire people of Langtang very devastated.

Chairman of the House Committee on Youth Development, Hon. Martins Esin, described the act as very condemnable, saying “we pray that this does not happen again.”

He said while it is the expectation of the House that the IGP carry out a speedy investigation for the delivery of justice, the committee would take the mandate before it seriously, and ensure that adequate compensation is delivered to the family.

Also responding to a question on what the current National Assembly will do differently over the repeated attacks of similar nature across the country, spokesman of the House, Hon. Akin Rotimi, appealed for understanding.

“Give us the benefit of doubt, though I can understand the distrust, but the 10th assembly is different,” he said.

He added that Silas is not just a number, but a person for whom justice must be served.
