Nigerian women disfranchised by lack of education- Etiaba

The Anambra state first female governor, Dame Virgy Etiaba, has identified lack of education as a factor triggering inequality among women in the Nigerian society.

Etiaba, who disclosed this at World Women’s Day organised by Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry Mines and Agriculture, Women Group (NAWORG) in Awka, the state capital, argued that there would not have been inequality if women were exposed to education like their male counterparts.

She advocated for girl child education across Nigeria especially in the disadvantaged regions and states with a view to empowering the women folk to contribute positively and effectively like their male counterparts.

“The only way out is for us to ensure the effective education of the girl child. That was why when I was governor in Anambra state I signed the girl child right into law. It doesn’t stop at signing it into law but the policing. You must see that it is fully implemented not just paying lip service to the issue”, according to her.

Earlier, the Anambra state Coordinator, National Association of Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture Women Group, Dr Mrs Uche Chukwu, explained that the celebration was aimed at ensuring that women get platforms to enhance their business ideas while gaining supports from government and other agencies.
