Kukah, Emir of Kano to grace UniCal convocation – Official

The Bishop of Sokoto Diocese of the Catholic Church, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Beyero, Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman and other distinguished Nigerians are expected to grace the 36th convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar (UniCal) this week.

The vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Florence Obi, who said this in Calabar, Monday, during a pre-convocation press briefing stated that Prof. Mamman would commission three outstanding projects in the institution while Bishop Kukah would give a convocation lecture.

She said: “On Thursday, the university shall have its 36th convocation lecture to be taken by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, and he shall dwell on the topic ‘Harmonising Diversity for National Development.”

Prof. Obi said 32 students would graduate with first class while 438 students would get their Doctorate degrees.

“We shall be graduating 32 students with the First Class degree. This is the highest since the establishment of the university 49 years ago. This shows that reading culture is returning to our institutions,” she noted.

She  added that the award of Diplomas, First Degrees and Masters to deserving students is scheduled for 23 March at the Abraham Ordia Stadium while 438 Ph.D students would get theirs on Saturday even as the institution management has put machinery in place to celebrate them in a gala night.

“Also, for the first time in the history of our institution, the management has decided to organise a gala night for the 438 PhD graduands and their supervisors,” she stated.
