FAAN issues red alert on security across airports



Security threats ranging from terrorism, cyber crime, insider threat among others must remain the focus of the Security Managers across airports in Nigeria in order to avert any unwholesome incident that will jeopardizes the safety of passengers and aircraft, FAAN Managing Director, Captain Hamisu Yadudu has warned.


The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria helmsman also challenged the security managers to up their game at various levels and develope well coordinated and robust measures in order to mitigate the worrisome sophisticated trends around airports operations.


Yadudu spoke at the Annual Retreat of Aviation Security personnel in Benin City, the Edo state capital affirming the need to address the ever evolving and increasing security threats in the aviation industry that have assumed alarming rate globally.


Represented by FAAN Director of security services, Capt. Usman Abubakar Sadiq, Yadudu noted that security of civil aviation was top priority that States are obliged to maintain an efficient air transport system in order to manage confusion and disorder in airport terminals as an essential to the security of the system.


According to him, FAAN had embarked on a strategic restructuring of its security and safety initiatives adding that under the present administration there have been provision and procurement of new scanning security equipment with the latest technology that detects explosive and narcotics detection.

They include passenger cabin baggage scanners, hold baggage scanners, body scanners and walk through metal detectors being produced in factories to be delivered on scheduled and deployed to all the five international airports and local ones.


Also, construction of bi-metal security fence with anti climb and intrusion detection systems are ongoing in Benin, Ilorin, Owerri Port Harcourt and Kaduna.


 Again, upgrades of CCTV are at various stages of completion in selected airports while the Murtala Mohammed Airport and four others would be ready soon.


 He explained that the huge investment in equipment had been matched by capacity building in terms of recruitment and training.
