Enugu community gets new Igwe 24 years after 



It was jubilation galore for Ogugu community in Awgu local government area of Enugu state as the leadership tussle over the traditional ruler of the place came to an end with the election of an Igwe-elect, Chief Aloysius Ogbonna Jnr. 

Blueprint learnt that the joy of the community knew no bounds because they had been without a traditional ruler since the demise of their late Igwe Godwin Ochi 24 years ago.

This great achievement brought joy to the people of Ogugu as there had been so many failed elections in the past in order for a traditional ruler to emerge.

The Ministry of Rural Development and Chieftaincy matters were on ground to witness the election which adopted an open ballot system of voting.

The people came out  en masse to cast their votes, as a total of 1, 230 persons were accredited, representing the six villages.

After coalition of results, the chairman of the electoral committee, Apostle Ethel Chukwura, announced that Gidim Godwin Egbo scored 363 votes while Chief Aloysius Ogbonna Jnr scored 867 votes and was declared winner and presented certificate as the Igwe-elect and Ugbogene II of Ogugu community.

In his speech, Chief Ogbonna said the victory came as a shock to him and gave God the glory for the outcome. 

He said it was the collective will of the people to see that the community benefits from dividends of democracy which they have been denied for 24 years.

He thanked Enugu state governor, Peter Mbah and the Commissioner for Rural Development and Chieftaincy Matters, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, for their support and equally thanked the community members who contributed immensely to see that the election was a success.
