Boko Haram: Adamawa parents reject student transfers

Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the Federal Government Science and Technical College, Michika in Adamawa state, said its members would not allow their children to be transferred to a similar school in Katsina state.

Following the February 20 Boko Haram insurgents’ attack on FGC Buni-Yadi in Yobe state, the Federal Ministry of Education closed down five Unity Schools.
The Federal Government Science and Technical College, Michika, in Adamawa state, was one of the schools affected by the development.

The school’s PTA chairman, Elijah Kwada, said in a telephone interview that the parents had held a meeting of the association to discuss the issue.
He said the meeting resolved that the parents would not move their children to Katsina or anywhere else.
“We had a meeting on Monday and resolved that our children are not going anywhere,” Mr Kwada said.
He said the parents also resolved to rather demand for adequate security in the school and not the transfer of their children.

“How sure are we that Katsina is safe?” the PTA chairman said.
He, however, said the association had put the parents’ position into writing and would take it to the Federal Ministry of Education.
Kwada said the children were now at home and their parents would rather put them private schools for them.
