2019: Southern Borno should produce gov – Group

A group known as Southern Borno Movement (SBM) yesterday called for the rotation of governorship seat in Borno state to different senatorial districts with strong argument that it is the turn of southern part of Borno to produce the governor in 2019.
The group pointed out that no one from Borno south senatorial district has ever been elected or appointed to rule the state since it was created.
The Chairman of the group, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman said it is unjust to keep the people of Borno south away from being at the helms of affairs in the state.
He lamented that since the creation of the state; the governorship position has remained in other zones to the detriment of the southern part notwithstanding that they have sons and daughters capable of managing affairs of the state.
Usman, who earlier addressed a press conference in Maiduguri in preparation for a-day submit to sensitize sons and daughters of southern Borno on the need to seek for the highest political position in the state in the upcoming 2019 elections, said the era where the position of second fiddle is reserved for the southern Borno people is no more feasible, emphasising that the zone has all it takes to govern the state.
He acknowledged the good performance of the previous administrations in the state, including the administration of Governor Kashim Shettima but pointed out that more needs to be done especially in the areas of education, health, infrastructure among others.
“We in southern Borno want sense of inclusiveness, justice and fairness through the zoning of power as is obtained at various political parties in other areas including at the federal level.
This will promote unity and give room for equitable distribution of dividends of democracy to the people.
”We will no longer play the second fiddle role in Borno politics.
We urge all political parties to the 2019 general elections to beam their searchlight to southern Borno through credible candidates that are numerous in our zones”, Usman added.
In a related development, the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said last weekend that the agitation for power shift was constitutional and the law provided for such agitation but warned that such agitation should be done lawfully and in accordance with the laws of the land.
He also said Nigeria is in democracy and people are allowed to express their feelings and make calls for social justice and equity as well as fairness but has to do that in accordance with the law.
The Minister who stated this at the Borno South Movement Summit on Power Shift held Saturday at Barwee Luxury Hotel Maiduguri called on Tue people to pursue their course denivractucally and constitutionally
