Subsidy removal led me to robbery – Uber driver

A 29-year-old man, Adeniran Jeremiah, has revealed how he ventured into robbery gang as a result of subsidy removal in Lagos

The suspect, who was arrested by operatives of Lagos state Police Command and paraded on Friday, said he joined the syndicate of Uber drivers who dispossessed passengers and cart away their valuables due to low passengers as a result of subsidy removal in Nigerian.

Narrating his ordeal, he said they were three in numbers doing the business and he joined the business just last month.

“We are three in the business and our mode of operation was that, when en route a passengers at any spot, I will call them to wait along the road where they will join me in the car, they will do the robbery while I will be driving, after we finished, we dragged out of the car and away her belongings”

We shared any amount found equally, this is my fourth time and I have made close to N700, 000 so far,” the suspect said.

Parading the suspect, Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, said he was arrested after their operations on July 8, 2023, at about 2300hrs, when a lady who was going to Lagos Island from Ikotun booked a ride.

He said she was picked at Governor’s Road, Ikotun, on their way, the Uber driver pretended that he had a flat tyre, parked the car and alighted.

“Shortly, other members of his gang surfaced and took over the steering while the driver was made to sit at the back,” he said.

According to him, the driver later brought out a knife and robbed the lady of her money and iPhone.

“Police operatives painstakingly embarked on an investigation that led to the arrest of the Uber driver one Jeremiah Adeniran aged 29 at BRT market Ikotun while selling the robbed items.”

Owohunwa said his operational Toyota Camry Saloon car and knife were recovered from him.
