Subject office holders to compulsory drug tests, Ganduje urges NASS

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has called on the leadership of the National Assembly to set the machinery in motion for the introduction of the law that would make it compulsory for political office seekers to undergo rigorous drug test in order to ascertain their mental fitness.

Speaking at the formal distribution of flags to flag-bearers for the office of the local government chairmanship on the platform of Al Progressives Congress (APC) held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, Thursday, Ganduje stated that with the introduction of the mandatory drug test for political office holders, the business of good governance and purposeful leadership could be enhanced, to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

According to him, the responsibility of conducting the mandatory drug test should be entrusted on the shoulders of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which possesses the professional know-how and expertise to confirm addicts, who after expressing their enthusiasm for seeking political office, could be easily fished out and disqualified.

He stated that introducing such a law by the National Assembly would ginger the confidence of the electorate that the nation’s Augean Stable would be manned by men of foul-free mental capacity, stressing that his government had introduced such a mandatory test in Kano in the wake of the preparations for the forthcoming local government elections.

He said “the flags we are distributing today are meant to confirm to everyone that all our 44 local governments’ contestant are of sound and foul-free mental fitness to seek the office of chairman, with no certain impediment to impede their respective interest. We have sought the cooperation of the NDLEA in achieving this noble objective.”
