Something’s fishy (IV)

A man who has never made a woman angry is a failure in life – Attributed to Christopher Darlington Morley

Dear Di,

“Dapo says otherwise. He says it was consensual,” Mrs Adegbite defended her nephew.
My head was whirling and I couldn’t focus. How could Dapo do such a thing? If he wanted any woman he could have tons of them, why rape Tola? Just then, what Mrs Adegbite said began to sink. And as if she knew I didn’t hear her the first time, she repeated “Dapo said it was consensual and I believe him.”
Well, now that I think of it, I believe Dapo.

“What I don’t understand is why she says he raped her and has even filed a case against him in court.”
“That is the big mystery. Dapo says he doesn’t remember much of what happened that night, but he’s sure it was consensual because when he was to leave her place the next morning, she was the one who called a cab for him because the effects of the drink they had hadn’t worn off. At least that was the reason she gave him.”

“Wow! I’ll give it to her; she really planned this well. How long have they known each other?”
“Since their undergrad days. She was the one he was going out with before he dumped her for you,” Mrs Adegbite answered with a cheeky smile.
“What?! She shouldn’t bare her fangs; Dapo and I are not an item.”
“Oh…didn’t you agree to start a relationship with him before his recent trip to the states?”
I gaped at her.

“Close your mouth, young lady. I know what goes on around here, He was so excited he told the family.”
“So excited that he ran back into Tola’s bed?”
She sighed.
“I think you should talk to him; he may open up to you so we can find a solution to this problem.”
“I still believe he should be sacked.” I have to get back to work. Thank you for letting me know what happened.”

“Hold on,” she stopped me as I got up. “Don’t tell your friends about this. Dapo would be devastated.”
“But they will find out eventually because at the rate Tola is going, something might slip from someone. Everyone at the board is tired of her. She also harasses the workers.”
“Okay, but promise me you won’t tell them until you’ve spoken to Dapo.”
“Ah…Mrs Adegbite,” she had me there. “Alright.”
“Thanks dear. Now leave my office so I can do some work before my boss comes in.”
“Yes ma.”

Mrs Adegbite knew us well. She knew I would tell the ladies so we can figure a way out and she knew if I told them I had to speak with Dapo before I could tell them, they would put pressure on me.
Some women are something else. What length is Tola willing to go to make Dapo marry her? And what happens after the marriage? Hasn’t she thought of that? Or is she planning to kill him after marriage and be the sole heir to his father’s fortune?

Tola’s action these past two months show she’s capable of doing anything to achieve her goal.
I wanted to call Dapo with my phone or send a message, but I didn’t want to take the risk of Tola finding out, so I called his direct line from my office.
“I’ll be at your house at 6pm. We need to talk,” I said when I was sure he was the one that answered.
I hope he knows which house I’m talking about.
