Rumpus over rising unprofessional conduct by doctors

Police authorities and leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kwara state are worried over rising cases of breach of medical ethics, including sexual abuses and organ harvesting by medical doctors on their patients, thereby prompting the state police command to mount surveillance on medical facilities in the state UMAR BAYO ABDULWAHB reports .

The Kwara State Police Command has placed all medical facilities in the state under surveillance following recurring cases of breach of medical ethics and trust by medical doctors in the state, a development which had also claimed lives of some innocent patients.

The police had recently arrested and arraigned a 36-year-old medical doctor and former medical director of Kaiama General Hospital, Kwara state Dr Adio Adebowale Abass Adeyemi for allegedly killing four persons in the state for alleged organ harvesting purpose.

One of the victims, who was reportedly missing at ‘F’ division of the state’s command, Tanke, Ilorin, was same young lady killed, dismembered and the corpse thrown into the bush at Alapa in Asa local council of the state.
While the dust over that is yet to settle, residents of Ilorin, Kwara state capital also received the shocking news of the arrest of chief medical director of Ayodele Hospital Sawmill, Ilorin, Dr Ayodele Joseph who allegedly sedated and raped his patient during a procedure to carry out surgical operation on her.

The patient, a nurse (names withheld) reporedly came for treatment in Dr Joseph’s hospital when the medical director allegedly took advantage of her.

Consequently, the doctor was arrested and arraigned over offence bothering on gross indecency and rape.

While the first case occured at a government hospital in Kaiama, the second incident in Ilorin occured at a private medical facility.

Parading Joseph among other ‘criminals’ recently in Ilorin, the Kwara state Commissioner of Police, Paul Odama said they initially arraigned the doctor at a Magistrate Court not to run foul of the law on detention pending the conclusion of police investigation on his matter.

Explaining how Dr Joseph was caught in the alleged act of sedation and rape, Odama said the police was on top of the act. While parading the suspect, the state
Commissioner of Police, Paul Odama, said, “On May 5, 2023, a female victim (name withheld), a nurse by profession, reported to the police that she went to Ayodele Hospital at 290, Sawmill area, Lagos Road, Ilorin, for surgery.
“The chief medical director of the hospital, Dr Ayodele Joseph, during the treatment, sedated the patient, which led her to become unconscious.
“Before the sedation, fearing any mishap, the patient activated her telephone and placed it in a vantage position to record the surgery unknown to the doctor before the expected surgery.
“She woke up from sleep after the surgery to find herself fully naked and when viewing the recorded video, she discovered that the said Dr Ayodele Joseph had unlawful sexual intercourse with her while under sedation.
“Investigation led to the recovery of the video recording of the sexual action of the said doctor on the victim which was also corroborated by the medical examination conducted on the victim.”

She is my girl friend – Doctor

Denyning the allegations, Ayodele told reporters that the female nurse he was accused of sedating and raping is his girlfriend.
The doctor, who said the nurse was his employee and had been his girlfriend for eight years, described the allegation of rape as a set-up.
“She is my girlfriend and we have dated for eight years. I trained her as a nurse; I sponsored her to a school of nursing in Lagos and I employed her. How can I rape a lady that I have had intercourse with several times?
“What else do I want to see in her body? She only wanted to set me up to rip me of some money. Already, she has collected a substantial amount of money which is with her. She has already collected about N500,000 from me on this issue and she is still demanding more money, ”Joseph said.

Speaking further, the CP said the medical director was also involved in four different cases before the command regarding his practice.
Odama said the suspect had earlier been arraigned for causing the death of one Nneka Akanike in his hospital.
He said the leadership of the state branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) had been reached on the recent case.

NMA chair weeps

The CP also said the leadership of the NMA in the state have been brieged of rhe development.
“The NMA chairman was here, I called him and when he came, he left crying because this man was involved in a situation before and I called him, in fact, he was the one that bailed him from the court.
“But this time around when he came, he left crying. In fact, he withrew his sureties from the court. I am forced to bring him out to show Ilorin people, to show Kwara people that this man is dangerous, unfortunately this is the second doctor we are dealing with. If I don’t show him to peoeple, they will continue to go there and the same thing will happen. I just want to inform you that we have four cases in the command in respect of this doctor,” the CP said .
The police boss said the medical doctor would be sued to court for rape at the conclusion of ongoing investigation.

Police mount surveillance on medical facilities

As measure to forstsll further occurrence, the CP said the state police command has placed all medical facilities in the state under surveillance.
He said that security officers had been deployed to barricade the hospital premises of Ayodele Hospital with plain dress security men in many other hospitals.
The CP said the command has also written to the state’s Ministry of Health to inform it of the development.
This recent development in the state is one embarrassment too many to the practice of medicine in Nigeria.
