NOC mourns, commiserates with SWAN over Ajuonuma’s death

The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, and members of the Olympic Family have expressed sadness over the demise of Ignatius Ikechukwu Ajuonuma.

Ajuonuma, who passed on November 3, 2023, was a dedicated sports journalist, based in Lagos that made significant impact in the field.

A condolence message released by Mr Tony Nezianya, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the NOC urged his Spouse, Daar Communication and the entire sporting fraternity “to please accept our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.”

Part of the statement reads, “Ajuonuma’s unwavering commitment to his profession was truly exceptional, especially considering the challenges he faced as a blind individual.

“His determination and refusal to let his visual impairment hinder his contributions to the growth and development of sports journalism were truly inspiring. Despite this handicap, his work remained of the highest calibre, demonstrating his immense talent and passion.

“As a dedicated sports journalist, Ikechukwu’s impact can never be overstated.

“His insightful analysis, clear communication, and thorough coverage of sporting events enriched the industry and captivated audiences.

“He played an integral role in bringing the thrill of sports to the masses through his work with Daar Communications, operators of Ray Power and African Independent Television (AIT).

“He was a beacon of knowledge and expertise, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of his colleagues and avid sports enthusiasts alike.

“Ajuonuma’s exceptional contributions were not limited to his professional life alone. Known for his unwavering commitment, he was admired and respected by those who were fortunate enough to know him personally. His kindness, empathy, and genuine concern for others were qualities that set him apart and made him an exceptional human being.

“During this time of profound grief, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May you find comfort and solace in the memories of Ikechukwu’s remarkable life and the immense legacy he leaves behind.

“Though Ajuonuma may no longer be with us physically, his impact will continue to resonate, inspiring and influencing others in the years to come.

“May his soul find eternal rest, and may you find strength and peace amidst this profound loss.”
