Kano women protest against rising rape cases

Disturbed by growing cases of rape in Kano and its environs, hundreds of women under the auspices of women professional groups yesterday in Kano staged a peaceful protest to press home their demand on the need to nip the practice in the bud. Th e protesting women, according to fi ndings, had defi ed the early morning rain to come out enmasse to protest what they described as “the alarming spate of rapes” which had taken a destructive toll on the future of young girls, adding that the protest was convened to showcase their anger over the dastardly act. Speaking to newsmen, the Convener, Hajiya Aishatu Dankani, said the women professional groups were ready to seek for redress in court, if their complaints and grievances were not listened to. According to her, their disillusionment was meant to address the lingering issue of rape. She said the future of women was likely to be totally jeopardised with the perpetrators of the act sometimes allowed to go scot free, pointing out that once the culprits involved in the act were made to pay a heavy price, the menace would be drastically curtailed
