Jigawa assembly okays death sentence for rapists

The Jigawa state House of Assembly has passed into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition as well as Rapists Bill.

Passage of the bill followed the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Justice and Judiciary, chaired by Abubakar Jallo and seven members.

In view of this, the speaker, Idris Garba Kareka, announced the passage of the bill after deliberation and adoption of the report of the committee.

The bill passed into law has 58 recommendations, including life imprisonment for rape offenders and death sentence without an option of fine for infecting rape victims with HIV/AIDS.

Speaking after the plenary, Hon Jallo told journalists that rape victims would be compensated with not less than N500,000 while the court could order the subjection of rape offenders to public shame through radio announcement and other means that the court deems fit.

The member representing Hadejia constituency, Hon Jallo stated that the use of life threatening chemical, biological or any harmful substance that causes deformity on the victim attracts life imprisonment without an option of fine.
