A coalition of youth groups under the auspices of North East Youth Progressive Union and Coalition for Democratic Rights Group in Northern Nigeria, have decried the deteriorating state of education in the North-east, calling governors of the region to emulate Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano state, who they said has changed the state of education in the state just few months in office.
They group made their position known at a press conference held in Yola, Wednesday, read by their chairman, Dr. Kabir Hassan Sambo, who called on North-east governors to rise up to the challenges of salvaging the education sector and human capital development in their various states.
“We are therefore calling on governors from the North East and by extension the entire northern governors to emulate the good work of His Excellency, Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano state in the education and capacity building programmes.
“The strides in Kano have gotten the people of state excited in actual fact. The youth of northern Nigeria have had their hope in the future development renewed. We really need all northern governors tohh emulate these steps by Kano and to prioritize education and human capital development,” the coalition stated.
They group gave the giant strides of kano Governor in the education sector within the last 5 months to includes payment of tuition ,feeding and accommodation fees of 1001 post graduate students to India.
Other feats performed by the Kano governor include payment of WAEC, NECO fees for 57,000 students, settlement of tuition fees of 7000 students at the Bayero University among others, saying the students in Kano are now granted 50% discount on their fees, even as the state has opened 26 skill acquisition institutes for training and empowerment of residents of Kano.
According to them, the governor has also procured and distributed education support materials to over 9000 schools with over three million pupils benefiting from uniforms, books, computers and other teaching/learning aids among many other achievements in the education section.
