Col. Sani Bello and the rest of us

Former military Governor of Kano state Colonel Sani Bello could not escape my memory the time he became military Governor of Kano state. Really, Kano state was lucky to have military governors ranging from Police Commissioner Late Alhaji Audu Bako to the person I am trying to talk about even when the duration of time to this day is over 30 years.

Really, Late Audu Bako did his best seeing how Kano state was transformed into a nation of itself, judging the developmental effects of that time. We should say bravo to the fallen hero.

Back to the young governor by that time in respect of Colonel Sani Bello. Surely, every person that could manage Kano state by that time must be a courageous one seeing the conservative and conventional nature of Kano state till date.

There is no exaggeration if one suggests Kano to be conservative seeing the difficult mechanism in running the government; whoever has the opportunity to govern it for even a single day. Colonel Sani Bello had many challenges from both segments of the society – monarchical and the political; and then, the helpful hands of the Ulamas. All these segments have vital roles to play in Kano state till date!

Colonel Sani Bello had tactically controlled the tempo, having had a managerial training from his being a young man with a fresh brain. Sani Bello “Colonel” had come and conquered Kano state with reasonable humility, gentility and respectability needed of any leader.

I had never been in contact with this respected soldier who did his best during his tenure as the military governor of Kano state. There was only a time when I saw him from a distance during the launching of a book authored by Professor Balarabe Maikaba of Bayero University sometime last year.

Colonel Sani Bello was accompanied by his son, the brother of the current Governor of Niger state that has really performed credibly well. Alhaji Sani Bello would always be remembered for his contributions to Kano state, especially on education and health sectors plus a lot of things projected wisely to improve our economy.

Really, as I said, Kano state is difficult to govern, especially as it is more populated than some countries coupled with its conservative nature just like Sokoto and Borno states. Every individual that is due to govern Kano state must be imbued with a noble heart so as to manage it successfully. Politicians and military governors, kudos for your temperate nature to bear such conservative nature of our state.

We extend our goodwill to the able former military governor of Kano state for the gentle appearance during the launching of a book on Jarman Kano, Late Alhaji Adamu Dankabo, may Allah bless his soul, amin.
