Breaking: Supreme Court stamps Makinde as Oyo governor

The Supreme Court Wednesday confirmed Governor Oluseyi Makinde of Oyo state as the duly elected governor, putting an end to agitation by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Recall that on Monday, November 11, the Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan, had set aside the judgement of Governorship Election Petition Tribunal declaring Mr Makinde, as the winner of the March 9 election.

The appeal was filed by the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship candidate, Bayo Adelabu against Mr Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

In a four-against-one judgement, the five-man panel said the tribunal judgement was perverse but did not give an order for a fresh election or a retrial.

The court held that there was a miscarriage of justice at the tribunal, and that Mr Adelabu’s right to fair-hearing had been breached.

The court said it could not grant a consequential order for a retrial of the case as the 180 days prescribed by law for a tribunal to decide election matters had elapsed.

All the parties, therefore, appealed the ‘controversial’ judgement at the Supreme Court.
