8 miners die, 2 injured in Nigeria, Ghana

Six people were killed and two injured after the roof of the reclaimed tunnel at the Ahafo Mill Expansion project in Ghana collapsed last Saturday.
Other workers were evacuated and operations have been suspended to allow for an investigation into the causes of the accident.
The project is run by US-based Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM).
The site is located in the Brong Ahafo region, some 307 kilometers from Accra.
The company’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Gary Goldberg in a statement said: “On behalf of the entire Newmont family I would like to express our deepest sorrow and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and co-workers of the victims”
“Our priorities right now are to support the families of those who lost loved ones in this terrible accident, and to cooperate with authorities to investigate its causes.”
The Ahafo Mill Expansion was expected to improve volumes in the first half of 2018 and improve costs beginning in 2020. The namesake mine produces 349,000 ounces of gold per year and the overall operation employs 2,500 people.
Newmont is the world’s second-biggest bullion producer, after Barrick Gold.
In a similar incident the police in Plateau state, Nigeria, have confirmed the death of two persons in a mine collapse which occurred in Wase Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, Terms Tyopev, confirmed the incident in Jos.
Mr. Tyopev told NAN that the incident took place on April 7.
“At about 23 hours, the Wase Police Division received information that there was a mining collapse which led to the death of two people.
“The people that died were Safianu Yinusa of Kangial Village, Dengi Kanam Local Government Area; and Usman Abdulahi of Gwaram Village, Bashar District of Wase,” he said.
He said that investigation was on to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the collapse.
However, inquiry on the updates of the investigation by this reporter through a WhatsApp message to the special assistant on media to the minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Yinka Oyebode could not be confirmed as the special assistant said he was not in town but directed me to the director of press who could not be reached at time of filing this report.
