Zamfara to engage graduates in tax drive

Zamfara state government has concluded arrangements to employ graduates under a Special Tax Collection programme initiated by the state government. State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, while addressing stakeholders in tax collection at Government House in Gusau, said the decision to launch an aggressive tax collection campaign followed the signing of an Executive Order on Voluntary Assets Declaration last week by the Acting President Prof Yemi Osinbajo, in Abuja.

Th e Nigeria Governors’ Forum Chairman, who said all the 36 governors have agreed and supported the new tax regime, emphasised the signifi cance of the new arrangement on revenue generation. He said the country “is left behind in the area of tax payment, which also contributed to low revenue generation”. Yari said the new policy, where people would voluntarily declare their assets and pay due taxes, would contribute signifi cantly to improve the nation’s revenue.

Th ose present at the briefi ng were Commissioners, Special Advisers, chairmen of local councils, Permanent Secretaries, Traditional Rulers and other top government functionaries. A Special Committee under the chairmanship of the state Head of Service, Alhji Mujutapha Isah, is charged with the responsibilities of implementing the new tax collection regime and boosting the state revenue generation. Membership of the committee were drawn from the ministries of Finance, Local Government, Commerce, Justice, Revenue Agencies, Traditional Councils, among others.
