Zamfara councilors impeach chairman, vice

Maradun local government council chairman in Zamfara state, Alhaji Ahmed Abubakar Maradun alongside his vice, Alhaji Shehu Muhammad Faru, were Thursday impeached by nine of ten local council law makers. The speaker of the local council, Kabiru Muhammad Danwante stated this on behalf of the local council law makers at a press conference shortly after holding a crucial meeting with all law makers at the local council secretariat in Maradun.

He said nine of the ten councillors  unanimously agreed on the impeachment of the chairman and his vice, adding that, the council  unanimously nominated a councilor representing Maradun south, Alhaji Surajo Madugu who served as acting vice chairman as new chairman of the council. He said the local council law makers accused the impeached chairman of non performance which is contrary to section 19 of Zamfara local government law, 2012. They also  accused him of commiting an act of gross misconduct contrary to section 22(2) (b) of Zamfara local government law 2013, as interpreted by section 22 sub (4). Other accusations by the council law makers against the outgoing chairman include, being unable to discharge their duties as provided by 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as provided for at fourth schedules and section 22 (2b) of local government law 2013 among other charges respectively. On the issue of vice chairman, the council law makers also accused him of refusing to conduct a meeting of the council since he assumed as acting chairman of the local government with a view to provide details of how the local council spent funds allocated by the state ministry for local government and community development, the action which contravenes Zamfara local government law, section 28(1) that provided for a meeting at least once a Month.

In his acceptance speech, the newly nominated chairman, Surajo Madugu, promised to carry everyone along and follow the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Zamfara state local government law in running the affairs of Maradun local council during his stewardship as chairman.
