World Humanitarian Day: UN call for domestication of refugee bill

The United Nation organisations and its agencies have called on the Adamawa state House of Assembly to domesticate and passed the refugee bill in order to ameliorate the suffering of refugees and displaced persons.

They stated this at this year’s humanitarian day celebration malkohi  IDP’s camp Adamawa state.

Speaking during the advocacy visit to the state Assembly Momsiri Gambo of United Nation Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Agencies (UNOCHA) Momsiri Wesley Gambo  appreciated the lawmakers for their supports and calls for more harmonious working relationship with the lawmakers.

She urged the lawmakers to keep on the good work of identifying with the suffering of their people especially the vulnerable who are in need of urgent attention stressing that, there are a lot of vulnerable people in Adamawa who they have been working to provide succour and supports to.

She said this year’s world humanitarian day with the theme :  “Women Humanitarian” is also aimed at celebrating those  who have been in the frontline assisting victims of disasters and vulnerable who are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Also speaking, the Mr. Peter  Ebuga of UN non governmental organisations (NANGO)   traced the history  of world humanitarian day to 2003 when UN special representative to the press secretary  Sajo Bello and 21 of his colleagues were killed in Baghdad.

He further explained that ,since the first humanitarian day was marked on 19th August, 2009 the day has become a global day set aside to celebrate members of CSOs  community who are actually in frontline  responding to disasters either man made or natural.

He also called for the domestication of the refugees bill which he said would go a long way to mitigate their suffering adding that, they have also lost their member in the course of duty hence the need to work with the legislature to see how the bill that will affect the lives of the vulnerable can be passed into law.

On his part, the director of rescue and rehabilitations in Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) Mohammed Umar Bindir urged the lawmakers to work with all international organizations, governmental and Non Governmental Organisations to chart a way forward for refugees, displaced persons and vulnerable.

Responding, the deputy Speaker of the Adamawa state House of Assembly Hon. Pwamdwa keno mackondo, commended UN and its agency for their efforts and assured them of their readiness to work with and ensure that all laws that positively affect the lives of refugees, displaced and other vulnerable passed.
