Ukiwe roots for restructuring, condemns open grazing

Former Chief of General Staff Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, has condemned the existing structure in the country, describing it as no longer desirable since it lacked equity and fair play. Ukiwe, who was chairman at the 4th anniversary of the establishment of Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF), Igbo interest group in Enugu, yesterday, said now is the time to take up the issue and look at it critically for the peace and progress of the country.
“The present structure of the country does not reflect equity, justice and fairness in many aspects of our national life. It is therefore necessary to take up the issue of restructuring to achieve equity, fairness, and freedom for the component federating units of the country,” he said.
The former military leader said he was aware that groups had spoken on the restructuring but it was imperative that ADF should contribute theirs. Ukiwe condemned the rampant killings in various parts of the country, saying it does not bring peace, progress and development. He also condemned open grazing, saying it is obsolete, pointing out that there should be a redesigning of animal husbandry.
“It is therefore necessary that a serious look at redesigning animal husbandry that suits the nation at this point in time is undertaken. Definitely, the idea of herdsmen carrying military weapons arrogantly across the nation as if to cow down the population, is offensive and unacceptable to the Nigerian society and should therefore be immediately stopped,” he stated.
