The Director, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Department of Science and Technology Mrs. Rosemary Umanah, has called on students to choose careers that suits their aptitudes instead of those imposed on them by their parents.
She said this at the annual Career Guidance Day of Government Girl’s Science Secondary School, Kuje.
Mrs. Umanah who, was represented by a one of the senior staff of the department, Mr. Tyoor Ezekiel, advised the students to take their studies seriously with a view to standing out among others, saying the era had passed when some professions were considered the exclusive preserve for men.

“Don’t allow your education to end in the kitchen because now, more than ever before, women are blazing a trail in all works of life,” Umanah said.
While calling for more determination on the part of the students, she noted that the educational achievements of women “could have positive effect on family and the nation at large”.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Director, Guidance and Counseling Department FCT Education Research Center (ERC) Dr. Olorungbemi encouraged students to choose career they have passion for.

Olorungbemi noted that there are students who make choice because of parental or friends influence, adding: “Many Nigerian students have chosen careers such as law, business or medicine, which they cannot perform well because of peer influence. This should not be so. It is your interest and ability that will keep you on” she said.
In her presentation, the medical director of Kuje General Hospital, Dr. Tabunde Egbi, urged students to consider a career in the medical profession, to ensure that skilled staff were available over the coming years in our hospitals.
The day-long career guidance programme allowed students to interact with experts on various career opportunities.
