Sokoto budgets N169m for the renovation of Giginya Stadium

Sokoto state government is to spend N169 million for the renovation and upgrading of the Giginya Memorial Township stadium in the ancient city, commissioner of Sports and Youth Development, Alhaji Musa Ausa Gidan Madi has disclosed. Th e commissioner who stated this while briefi ng newsmen on the score card of governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in two years under his ministry said the stadium facility needed to be upgraded to international standard and for the usage of the youths in the state. He further hinted that soon work would also commence at each of the additional stadia to be established in each zone with N150 million already released as take off for the commencement of work. “Th e contract had been awarded”, he pointed out. Musa Ausa also assured that the state owned football club, Sokoto United would continue to be adequately funded so as to get to the premier level” Th e team is moving gradually from amateur league to professional league”, he expressed optimism. Th e Commissioner explained that schools sports especially at the grassroots would be supported, encouraged and promoted to bring out young talents in various sports. While stating over 70 grassroots football clubs across the state got support of the state government through the purchase and distribution of kits and equipment. “We are planning to organize a mega inter schools sports competition.”
