Sexual harassment: UniZik demotes randy lecturers, deny students’ protest

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state on Friday said they had demoted some lecturers accused of sexual harassment.

The vice-chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, who disclosed this in a statement signed by his special adviser on public relations and special duties, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, also denied the allegation that the students of the university protested over any sexual harassment.

Esimone said there was an on-going investigation over alleged sexual harassment by some lecturers in some departments which prompted the institution to remove the affected lecturers from their official positions and in addition issued them strong warning letters.

He, however, added that students who alleged sexual harassment against lecturers were not forthcoming to testify before the investigation panel.

The statement also noted that the vice-chancellor had summoned the affected departments to a meeting where he expressed the university’s displeasure and warned lecturers and staff to desist from all actions that would bring the name of the university to disrepute.

It noted further that the vice-chancellor made a dedicated telephone number available to enable students report all forms of harassment by staff, especially sexual harassment, adding that any staff indicted in such an offence would be sanctioned accordingly.
