SDP mourns COAS, others

The Social Democratic Party, (SDP) has expressed deep shock “over the tragic loss of the country’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru along with other officers of the Nigerian military in the ill-fated military air plane that crashed in Kaduna last Friday.”

In a statement yesterday by the national publicity secretary, Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba, the party said it was “cognisant that the military, particularly in recent time, under the new service chiefs have been engaged in great efforts at combating the criminal activities of terrorists that are waging war against the Nigerian-state”.

“The party condoles the President, Commander-In-Chief, Muhammad’s Buhari, GCFR, the families of the fallen heroes, the Nigerian military and all Nigerians in this moment of national grief.

“Mindful that air crashes are usually caused by human error, mechanical malfunction or acts of God (bad weather), the party calls on the authorities to conduct proper investigations to get to the cause of this particular crash, in order for necessary steps to be taken to forestall the reoccurrence.

“The government is also called upon to prioritise right investments in improving our security infrastructure so as to strengthen the military in the ongoing war to free the nation from terrorists and insecurity generally.

“The party prays for the repose of the great souls of all the fallen heroes and for God to grant their families and all Nigerians the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
