The Edo State Police Command Monday stated that a police officer who unlawfully discharged teargas at Ogida area in Benin City, resulting in the death of a resident, has been arrested and subjected to disciplinary and criminal procedures.
The command said the officer’s arrest underscores its resolve to hold accountable anyone found culpable in the misuse of security equipment capable of endangering lives.
In a statement issued Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the command recalled that the incident occurred on May 25, 2025, when the officer unlawfully discharged teargas in the area, leading to the unfortunate loss of a life.
The command also announced the arrest of three bouncers and a suspected pepper spray supplier over the unlawful discharge of pepper spray during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The police said the pepper spray incident, which occurred on May 27, 2026, caused panic among children and other participants at the event.
”Those arrested in connection with the incident were identified as Ifeanyi John Paul, 36; Ola Ibikunle, 46; and Onoha Chukwuoji, 33, all of whom were allegedly involved in the unlawful act.
”Further investigations led to the arrest of Mrs. Rebecca Hassan, who was alleged to have supplied the pepper spray used during the event,” the statement noted.
The command expressed concern over the increasing unpaid entitlements , unauthorised possession and unlawful use of restricted security accoutrements such as pepper spray, teargas canisters and other force-related equipment by private individuals, bouncers, vigilantes and unauthorised security outfits.
