Police arraign man for theft, resisting arrest

A 28 labourer, James Agbaka, who allegedly attempted to steal electric cables and also resisted being arrested by the Police has been charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Agbaka, who resides at Victoria Island, Lagos, is facing charges of conspiracy, attempt to commit a criminal offence and escape from lawful custody.

The Prosecutor, Corporal Babaji Ishaku, told the court that Agbaka committed the offences at 2.30am on May 15, 2014, in Ikoyi, Lagos.
He said the accused was spotted with others, who are now at large, attempting to steal the cables, property of the Eko Distribution Company at Federal Secretariat Road, Ikoyi.

Ishaku said that while his accomplices escaped, the police arrested the accused and shot him on his left foot when he tried to resist arrest.
The prosecutor said that Agbaka was subsequently, taken to the General Hospital on Lagos Island to receive treatment for his injuries but escaped from the hospital.
Agbaka who was sporting a heavily bandaged left foot, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Miss Oluwatosin Fowowe, granted the labourer bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Fowowe adjourned the case until June 23 for trial.
