On rising unemployment

Unemployment is a critical issue which has negative impacts on the youths Unemployment refers to an individual seeking a job but is unable to find one. Many Nigerian youth are facing this challenge either from government, companies, or self incompetency.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) the rate of unemployment in Nigeria was at approximately 7.96 per cent in 2020. Most youths in Nigeria today find it difficult to get a job because of the high rate of human population and high rate of educational graduate.

Government serves as a killer of poverty by its policy implementation. But poverty is now pervasive in our societies. Our leaders are giving room to hardship in various communities because at grassroots administration (local governments) there are pockets vacancies but the people cannot access them. Similarly, most of Nigerian directors in the MDAs are slatting their own candidates when government gives a room for mass recruitment.

In 2017 when I newly obtained my diploma certificate, I heard about massive recruitment in the state ministry of information. I applied for the job based on my qualification, but behold till date I didn’t hear from the body anymore rather I heard that the government has slatted their own candidates silently.

It is in Nigeria you can easily see every year civil servants are retired from office but no room for mass employment. How can government will fight poverty and reduce the rate high rate of unemployment by this unethical act?

Most of Nigerians are crying out loud by calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to create jobs for the youth despite the fact he created some empowerment programme such as N-power, youth Investment programme, etc.

Now Nigeria’s private companies treat workers as slaves by not paying them their wages promptly and poor salaries. The other problem is the competence of applicants. Many Nigerian youth seem to be lazy. How many youth have skills? The majority of our youth are depending on their parents, friends and relatives. Also, you can easily see unemployed youth as a result of incompetency, because most of them don’t take their job seriously. As a result of this he/she may be fired from office.

Furthermore, I recommend that government should restructure its youth empowerment programmes and should monitor its cabinet for transparency. Government should expand and create more entrepreneurship programmes.
