Oboabona washes hands off Super Eagles bribery allegations

A former Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona has washed his hands off the bribery allegations against the national team’s former handlers.

An ex international Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi had in a recent press interview alleged that he was dropped from the Super Eagles squad to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil because he refused to grease the hands of team officials.

Since then the media have been awashed with various claims from other ex internationals, with some corroborating Ogbuke’s allegations.

However, Godfrey Oboabona, who was one of the few home based players in Nigeria’s 2014 World Cup team, denied knowledge of the bribery claims.

Featuring on the BCOS TV sports programme anchored by Boluwaji Ogunmola and produced by Adewale Tijani, Sports Show, Oboabona said nobody demanded or got any bribe from him.

“I don’t know anything about the bribery allegations in Super Eagles camp. When I started playing for the national team I didn’t have money to pay any Coach. I was a home based player and didn’t have any agent that could pay for me. In actual fact I was never approached for a bribe. I only got money from playing football, I never paid to play”, the former Sunshine Stars ace defender said.

Oboabona, who broke into Super Eagles squad under late Stephen Keshi described the Big Boss, who took the 2014 Super Eagles squad to the World Cup, as a disciplined man, who to his knowledge, never demanded any money from any players.

“Stephen Keshi to me was a disciplined coach who never demanded money from any player”, he claimed.
