Obasanjo in court for perverting course of justice in Osun


A 36-year-old man, Adesiyan Obasanjo, who stood as surety for unknown person, was yesterday arraigned at a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, for allegedly perverting the course of justice. 


The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 8, 2020 at Dugbe police station, Osogbo. 


Prosecution alleged that the defendant stood as surety for one Yeye Bukola who has run away. 


Kayode stated that the defendant attempted to obstruct and pervert the course of justice by failing to produce Bukola to stand her trial and has thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 137 and 126 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol ll Law of Osun State, 2002.


Prosecution informed the court that Bukola was alleged to have obtained money under false and also issued a dud cheque at Dugbe police station, Osogbo. 


He explained that Bukola has run away since she was granted bail, alleging that Obasanjo aided her escape, thus jeopardizing police investigation. 


However, Obasanjo pleaded not guilty to the alleged obstruction of course of justice. 


His Counsel, Mr. Okobe Najite, urged the court to grant him bail. But, the prosecution opposed the bail, saying that Obasanjo and Bukola have relocated to another state. 


He explained that Obasanjo was tracked before he was apprehended. 
Magistrate Adekanmi Adeyeba, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. 


He thereby adjourned the case till December 9, 2020 for hearing.
