NSSEC tasks states on teacher’s welfare, training

The National Senior Secondary School Education Commission (NSSEC) has called on the state government across to country to invest vigorously on the welfare and training of teachers to enhance their performance.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr Iyela Ajayi made the call on Friday in Lokoja, Kogi state during the monitoring of learners achievement programme organized for students of senior secondary schools by the commission.

According to him, teachers play significant roles in educational sector, stressing that it has become imperative for state government to focus on capacity building of teachers to enable them impact the desired knowledge on the students.

“If you ignored teachers , you have succeeded in ignoring education. The federal government has done a lot to teachers by increasing their service years, payment of allowances among others. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu love teachers and does not joke with their welfare and I am assuring teachers that before the end of his first tenure a lot of packages will be enjoyed by teachers.

“As a commission saddled with the responsibilities of planing and policy formulation, we will be happy if teachers welfare are not taking with levity that is why we will continue to appeal to state government to do the needful for teachers” he said.

While speaking on the programme the Executive Secretary, said the monitoring of learners achievement in senior secondary schools is a periodic exercise designed to asses the impact of teaching and learning in the school system.

He said the exercise would help teacher’s instruction in school as well as assisting the learners to grow academically.

Ajayi said “This exercise is going on simultaneously in all the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory. This is the pilot scheme involving only students in senior secondary two (SS2), but from next year the commission will embark on comprehensive programme of monitoring learners achievement at the senior secondary schools which will cover SS1 to SS3”.

In her remarks, Animoku Elizabeth, the director of educational planing, research and statistics Kogi state ministry of education, stated that the state government is also in the process of establishing senior secondary school education board to complement the effort of the commission in teaching and learning.
