NMA cautions Yari over doctors’ recruitment

Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Zamfara state branch, Dr. Sunday Onazy, has cautioned Governor Abdulazeez Yari on the planned recruitment of doctors in South Korea.
Reacting to the planned recruitment, Onazy said NMA was never against recruitment of foreign doctors but only for the
governments to ensure the recruits were qualified.
He said there were established laws guiding the practice of medical doctors in the country, thereby foreign doctors ought undergo certified examinations.
“Medical and Dental Union has set up a standing rule that any foreign doctor
employed by the Nigerian government must be subjected to an examination before he is certified to practice as a medical doctor in Nigeria,” he said.
He said if the governor went ahead to recruit such doctors, the union must make sure that the recruited doctors must be screened and fully certified before allowed to practice in the hospitals.
On the mass exodus of medical doctors, from Zamfara state government-owned hospitals, the NMA chairman noted that the union was aware of the sad development, and called on the government to take necessary measures to address them.
He attributed the exodus to non commitment of the government in uplifting the status of the medical workers in the state government owned hospitals.
