The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has tasked President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) to make good governance the cornerstone of his administration, while urging him to ensure the diversification of the economy from oil dependent by boosting agriculture and manufacturing industry.

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, made the calls while addressing workers during the 2015 May Day in Lagos.
Ajaero, who commiserated with workers in South Africa and Nepal over the xenophobic attacks and earthquake respectively suffered in the two countries, want the new government to revive textile industries, address education, power supply and transportation to provide succour for the economy.

“Critical to our success as a nation is the issue of good governance. Nigeria has the capacity to meet up with her contemporaries in other parts of the world in all aspect of development if the challenges of good governance are properly addressed.
“This calls for policy formulation and implementation in all the key sectors of the economy. We must deepen the democratic process. We must hold our political office holders accountable in the current democratic dispensation.

NLC under our leadership will continue to be in the forefront to press for good governance, accountability and credible elections in Nigeria.
“The President elect must consolidate on the positive labour market policies of President Jonathan and correct the negative measures. Apart from endemic corruption, the greatest task at hand is the urgent need to transform oil dependent-economy to a diversified industrialised economy.

“We must begin to hold all elected government officials on fulfillment of their electoral promises and manifestos. Respect for right of citizens, electricity generation and distribution, employment generation, security, corruption, industrialisation, oil and gas industry, funding of tertiary education are issues the incoming administration must address decisively”.
