NGO supports 30 communities to fight open defecation in Yobe


In an effort to totally eradicate airborne diseases especially in vulnerable areas affect by the Boko Haram insurgency and enhance the coverage of nutrition intervention, a Non Governmental Organisation, Action Against Hunger under its community led project Working to Improve Nutrition in Northern Nigeria (WINNN) is targeting 30
communities in Yobe state.

The WASH officer (WINNN), Salisu Muhammad, stated this to newsmen in Damaturu on Monday.

He saif the programme was aimed at adopting an approach towards mobilizing communities to completely eliminate and sustain Open Defecation Free (ODF).

“We are targeting 10 communities in Machina, 11 in Fika and 9 in Yunusari local government areas, for them to realize the problems associated with open defecation and take necessary actions towards solving them.”

“It is also to encourage the use of latrine, improve personal
household and environmental hygiene and contribute in reduction in sanitation related diseases such as cholera, malnutrition, diarrhea” he said.

Muhammad further, said as result of efforts put on ground, 12 communities have so far been declared and certified as Open Defecation Free ODF by the State taskforce Group on Sanitation in the state.

Blueprint gathered that so far the programme had empowered communities that have the capacity to address their own sanitation issues and involvement of children and women in promoting Community-led Total Sanitation CLTS approach.
