National Assembly will not jettison resolutions- Falana

A Lagos lawyer and delegate at the national conference, Mr Femi Falana has said the national conference must come up with sound resolutions capable of propelling development that will positively affect the lives of the citizens.

Mr Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) noted that it is the only way Nigerians can have a sense of belonging.
He stated that while the majority of the members of the ruling class were more concerned about the devolution of powers, rotational presidency amongst others, the masses grappling with poverty and unemployment, hunger, common diseases and illiteracy want to see a constitution that can address these problems.

According to him the profundity or relevance of the resolutions to the issues of underdevelopment would make the people to embrace it and make it their own document saying that it would be difficult to the national assembly not to enact the resolutions into law.

He debunked the argument of the legality or otherwise of the conference adding that Section 5 of the constitution has empowered the president to convene a meeting of this nature maintaining that the president had already taken the conference to the council of state which advised him on how to go about it.

Falana said the constitution supported the conference as Nigerians can assemble and gather peacefully to discuss issues affecting them, pointing out that if the national assembly had enacted the law to proclaim the conference, that did not imply that they would accept the resolutions of the conference.

He said that sovereignty of Nigeria belongs to the people and therefore the National Assembly would not jettison profound resolutions made by the people on the country’s way forward.
