NASS adjourns plenary over death of Hon Prestige

Both Chambers of the National Assembly cut shot their plenary sessions Tuesday over the death of Hon Ossy Prestige , who until his demise, represented Aba North/South Federal Constituency of Abia state in the House of Representatives.

Specifically in the Senate, in line with tradition on such occurence, immediately proceedings of last session held on Monday, 21st December 2020, were adopted, various communications from President Muhammadu Buhari read by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan as well as his welcome speech from the 7 – week recess, proceedings were suspended till Wednesday ( today), in honour of the late lawmaker .

The Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi (APC Kebbi North) who moved for the adjournment said: “Mr President and dear colleagues, in line with our tradition at both chambers of the National Assembly as regards death of a serving federal lawmaker, I move that all items on the order paper today be stood down and that the Senate should adjourn plenary till tomorrow (Wednesday, February 10, 2020), in honour of Hon Ossy Prestige who died this week” .

After secondment of the motion by the minority leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP Abia South), and one minute silence observed for the deceased, the upper legislative chamber accordingly, adjourned plenary to Wednesday, February 10, 2020.

Meanwhile, both the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan and Minority Leader, in separate statements, mourned the passage of the federal lawmaker from Abia State .

Lawan in his own statement expressed shock and sadness over the death of Hon. Ossy Chinedu Prestige.

Lawan said the departed lawmaker will be sorely missed by all his colleagues in the National Assembly.

He commiserated with family, friends and political associates of the deceaaed over the irreparable loss.

He also condoles with the Government and people of Abia state and prayed that God Almighty would grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

Also in his own statement, Abaribe expressed sorrow and deep shock over the death of Hon. Prestige.

He declared that ‘Ossy’s death is a personal loss to him, being a bossom friend, brother and ally’.

He lamented that the zone Prestige represented, has lost a major stakeholder, a political leader of repute and one personality that is beholden to all irrespective of deferences in political party affiliation.

“I have lost a friend, brother, ally, a committed patriot and a good natured Abian. I had wished in my heart and prayed that Ossy recovers to continue with his work in the House.”

The Minority Leader, however, condoled with the family, the people of Aba North/South Federal Constituency, the government and people of Abia state on this huge loss.
