Lawmakers charge Niger SURE-P on education, youth empowerment

Niger state House of Assembly Committee on Rules and Business has charged the state SURE-P to give priority to interventions aimed at improving educational infrastructures and empowerment of youth.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Jibrin Akwanu, gave the charge yesterday while leading members of the committee on inspection of SURE-P intervention projects in Minna on oversight function of the Assembly.
Akwanu said the lawmakers had followed with keen interest the activities of SURE – P in the state and were satisfied with its performance, adding that “however, the deserved attention has not been paid to education.”

He said: “We have lots of projects that are being funded by SURE- P in Niger state but very few of them are in the area of education. Education is the best legacy we can give to our younger ones. Therefore, SURE-P has to take this seriously and ensure that more educational infrastructures are provided in our schools.”
Other members of the committee including the Majority Leader of the House, Honourable Haruna Labaran in their contributions called on SURE-P to ensure strict monitoring of funds disbursed to local governments for accountability and prudent management of such funds.

The Director-General of Niger state SURE-P, Hon. Hassan Nuhu, in his presentation, said substantial number of youths had been engaged and empowered in the state.
He said SURE-P had been working within the budgetary provisions approved by the Niger state House of Assembly.
He said the directorate had intervened in the provision of infrastructure at some tertiary institutions in the state, including the School of Health Technology and Justice Lami Abubakar School of Arts and Legal Studies in Minna.
