Lassa fever hits Anambra, kills one, 15 cases recorded

The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, Thursday, confirmed one death and 15 suspected cases of Lassa Fever in the state.

Obidike, who disclosed this in a press conference, noted that the fresh cases of the animal-born diseases were recorded within the month of January 2023.

According to him, there was nothing to panic as the state’s emergency response team were already responding to the cases while relevant surveillance measures had also been put in place to curtail spread.

“So far in Anambra state, we have recorded 15 suspected cases of Lassa fever and one death. The ministry is following the National guidelines in managing the cases of Lassa fever in the state. And we have started contact tracing to manage the situation and prevent further spread. Every resident is free to visit the nearest health facility if notice any signs and symptoms of Lassa fever.

“These include fever, weakness, headaches, vomiting and muscle pains. I encourage you all block all holes in your house to prevent rats from entering. Cover your dustbins and dispose of refuse properly. Practice good personal and hand hygiene by frequently washing hands with soap under running water,” he stated.
