Lagos assembly tasks LGs on severance allowance

Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Community Affairs, Abdulsobur Olawale Olayiwola, has reiterated the importance of prompt payment of severance allowance to political office holders by council chairmen.

The lawmaker, who led the committee in continuation of their oversight function across the 57 local governments and local council development areas stated the need for proper arrangements for payments of the severance packages to the concerned individuals.

The oversight team visited Ikosi Ejirin LCDA, Eredo LCDA and Epe local government and they were of the view that given the short time span before the expiration of the council chairmen’s tenure, prompt provisions need be made to pay the severance to avert passing over liabilities to the coming administration.

Sobur stated that: “Before now, we have given a directive that they should have a sinking fund where they will be keeping monies for rainy days so that at the end of the tenure, it will be used to pay the severance allowance.

“The essence of severance package is that all the political office holders will have their monies before the end of the tenure, but reverse is the case,” he said.

In Ikosi Ejirin LCDA under the leadership of Mr. Onanuga Shamsideen, the lawmakers commended his administration for putting in place a befitting legislative chamber for the councillors but reprimanded him for been the chairman of the tender board at the council, a development that is contrary to laid down procedures.
