Kebbi Assembly impeaches Speaker, deputy

Barely five months ago, Kebbi state House of Assembly has again impeached the Speaker, Hon. Hassan Muhammed Shallah, alongside his deputy, Hon. Jafaru Mohammed Zuru, for alleged embezzlement and misconduct.

The Assembly last year November impeached the then Speaker, Hon. Aminu Habib Musa Jega, and his Deputy, Hon. Muhammad Garba Bena, alongside with the Chief Whip and other Principal Officers of the House.

Basking on the euphoria of a simple majority in the Assembly, the members who stage the impeachment palaver are members who defected to the APC after the last year episode, and virtually all of them won their seat as APC members who would join the incoming members as APC won all the 24 Assembly seats.

With this development, the former Speaker, Habibu Musa Aminu Jega, took over his seat as the Speaker while Muhammad Garba Bena retained his seat as Deputy Speaker in an Assembly that have just one month to go.

In his reaction, the impeached Speaker, Hassan Muhammed Shala, told newsmen during a briefing that, the Assembly is on vacation and would reconvene on the 5th of next month, adding that his impeachment as carried out by the group is ridiculous describing their act as nothing but rebellious.

He pointed out that Musa Jega and his Deputy who were impeached last year have seized to be members of the House because they decamped to another party and their seat was declared vacant since then.

He argued that, their seating was illegal going by the fact that the entire House was on recess till next month, where they got the mace with which they use is illegal as the authentic Assembly mace is in the custody of the Clerk to the House.
The impeached Speaker, however, urged the people of the state to remain calm as nobody should take law into their hand promising that the whole imbroglio would become normal.
